Scope of civil aviation in India

What started as a government owned facility in India, is now a majorly privately-owned establishment – the civil aviation sector; with fully functioning airports, affordable carriers, radical information technology, interventions and growing emphasis on regional connectivity, the domestic aviation sector consists of almost 75% private airlines.

India is the ninth-largest civil aviation market in the world, with a market size of around US$ 16 billion. India is expected to become the third largest aviation market by 2020 and the largest aviation market by 2030.

Earlier which was branded as a costly way of travelling, affordable by a selected few; air travel is now, economical and popularly used means of traveling.

When I entered the line of travelling, more than 30 years ago, I remember being fascinated by the future that aviation sector held. As it is rightly remarked by Edward Vernon Rickenbacker on the International Civil Aviation Day “Aviation is proof, that given, the will, we have the capacity to achieve the impossible”, The concept of aviation industry was first introduced when the first flight in 1911 took off from Allahabad to Naini junction carrying only mail and introduced the concept of air travel in India, fast forward to 2000, several private airlines had entered the industry and many more were yet to come, these were the low cost carriers that challenged the government airlines and soon took over the majority of market, and this journey is the proof that Rickenbacker’s statement holds true in the aviation sector of India as well.
Growth in the civil aviation sector.

I can provide facts and figures regarding this sector but rather I would like to focus on what gates have been opened with the growth in the civil aviation sector.

It has played a tremendous role in the economy of the country, which, as it is known, is the base of any country. Civil Aviation is a major industry that facilitates the growth of business, trade and tourism, with significant multiplier effects across the economy. The country which has higher connectivity across the globe is successful in attracting Foreign Direct Investments. Majority of countries rely on aviation sector for their international freight shipments, and other investments. Our own country has more job opportunities, directly and directly, due to the advancement in the aviation sector.

Being an entrepreneur in the travel and tourism sector, and I cannot emphasis enough on how the tourism and civil aviation sector go hand in hand. Neither has the upper hand nor can it work without each other in today’s time. It goes without saying that people today prefer air travel as a means of transportation due to its economical fares and popular use, accessibility in this sense is in direct correlation with the effect on tourism of a certain place.

Be it for leisure purposes or business purposes, the regional tourism industry is heavily coloured by the people’s accessibility to air travel. Consequently, It is the tourism of a place that attracts passengers and new opportunities in the business sector. The most basic idea is that the facilities and their improvement of a regional area contributes to the tourism which in turn impacts the aviation sector.

It has been emphasised enough that accessibility attracts tourism, but accessibility does not just refer to air transportation, right? Even though there are many other means of accessibility, but air transportation not only makes it easier for domestic tourists but appeals a vast number of international tourists.

As for domestic tourism, air travel has been it easier for people to travel long distances in matter hours if not minutes, which is quite convenient for many people. Air transport has transformed the geographical facet of distances, even the most remote areas are now nearby, any journey around the world can be measured in terms of hours with the air transportation that can go up to 1950 km/hrs. The growth of international air traffic is directly proportionate to growth in international tourism. Methods like attractive package tours, competitive airfare, etc. attract enormous tourist every day, which is a stepping stone towards the development of both the sectors. Even the government policies regarding civil aviation sector and tourism sector affect one another. Hence, it would not be an understatement to say that the civil aviation sector and tourism are inter dependent. India to be the third largest aviation market by 2020.

Third largest civil aviation market by 2020

The future of civil aviation sector is optimistic. As already stated, Indian civil aviation sector is expected to be the third largest civil aviation market by 2020 and largest by 2030, it is no surprise that the number of passengers as well as cargo carried by planes have shown significant hike since the past decade.

This sector is also expected to gain many investors, especially from the private sector. The number of aircraft is expected to touch 800 by 2020. The low penetration ratio (0.04 per capita/p. a) provides immense opportunity for investment in aviation sector.

The aviation sector goes beyond the civil sector, not only is it involved in carrying passengers and cargo but is also involved in defence organization. It is an important organization which means that the government must get involved in the development along the correct lines. This opens a whole new set of opportunities in the defence sector as well as military aviation sector.

As the progressive development takes place, it might not be very long before civil aviation sector becomes an even more popular and economical means of transportation.
For India to develop aviation sector as any other major industry, it must be self-sufficient in fuel supply, rather than being dependent on other countries for major supply of unpolished petroleum.

India is a country that can provide and will provide a nurturing environment for the civil aviation sector to flourish in, it now depends on how that nurturing environment is used to develop the aviation sector, as a whole; the possibilities are immense, India can grow to be the largest aviation industry by 2030 as envisioned.
